Coinbase, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has publicly detailed a sweeping overhaul of its software development process centered on Cursor, the AI-powered coding environment. According to a case study published on the Cursor blog on June 23, 2026, the company has moved more than 2,400 engineers onto what it describes as an agent-first engineering model — a structure where AI agents handle the bulk of code generation while human engineers focus on defining intent and validating outcomes.

The initiative was not framed as a gradual adoption of AI tooling. Coinbase Senior Director of Engineering Chintan Turakhia made clear that integrating AI into existing workflows was insufficient. The company concluded that realizing the full value of modern AI models required redesigning the way engineering work is organized from the ground up. That philosophical commitment drove the decision to make Cursor the foundation of the new model rather than a supplementary tool layered on top of existing processes.

The metrics Coinbase is reporting are specific and substantial. In some teams, the time from idea to production has dropped from roughly 20 days to under two days — a reduction exceeding 90%. Across the company, 75% of all pull requests are now created by agents running in both cloud and local environments. Engineers are merging 55% more PRs per person than they were at the start of the year. Each developer is also saving an average of seven hours per week that would previously have been spent on manual coding tasks. Perhaps most structurally significant, feature development work that previously required full teams is now being completed by groups of one or two engineers.

Engineering Manager Kyle Cesmat attributed part of Cursor's appeal to model flexibility. Coinbase wanted the ability to work with the model of its choosing rather than being locked into a single provider. Cursor's optimized inference and caching infrastructure met that requirement. Cesmat also noted that with the release of Composer 2.5, Cursor had become the most cost-effective frontier model option available to the team.

For the broader industry, what Coinbase has demonstrated carries significant weight precisely because of the company's operating environment. Financial services firms face stringent security, compliance, and reliability requirements that often slow technology adoption.
