What it does

Qwen is a broad AI model family and assistant ecosystem developed by Alibaba. It is not just a chatbot; it spans chat, reasoning, coding, image/video understanding, audio, document processing, image generation, video generation, agent frameworks, and enterprise API usage through Alibaba Cloud.

As of May 2026, the current flagship in the Qwen ecosystem is Qwen3.7-Max. It is positioned for 1M-token context, advanced coding, long-running agent tasks, and autonomous workflows. Alibaba is also integrating Qwen into Taobao/Tmall commerce systems for agentic shopping workflows such as product search, virtual try-on, price tracking, logistics, and after-sales service.

Qwen’s differentiator is that it offers a much wider ecosystem than a single model. Qwen Studio gives consumers a free AI assistant experience, while Alibaba Cloud Model Studio gives developers API access to Qwen-Max, Qwen-Plus, Qwen-Turbo, Qwen-VL, Qwen-Coder, and Wan models.

Qwen3.7-Max is an agent-first flagship model designed for coding, tool orchestration, long-running workflows, and autonomous tasks. Qwen3.5-Plus is a large-scale multimodal model that supports text, image, and video input. Qwen3.5-Omni-Plus provides omnimodal capabilities across text, image, audio, and video understanding. Qwen3-Coder-Plus is the coding-focused model for software engineering, debugging, code generation, and agentic developer workflows.

Ecosystem

Qwen’s ecosystem is not built around one standard like Claude Skills. Instead, it has several layers.

Qwen Studio offers a free consumer-facing chatbot, image/video understanding, image generation, and document processing experience.

Alibaba Cloud Model Studio provides developer API access to Qwen, Qwen-VL, Qwen-Coder, Qwen-Omni, and Wan models. This is the main layer for enterprise and production use.

Qwen-Agent is an agent framework for tool use, planning, memory, browser assistants, code interpreter, and custom assistants. It is not a direct clone of Claude Skills, but it is one of the closest Qwen components for reusable agent behaviors and tool-based workflows.

Qwen Code is the coding agent and developer tool layer. With MCP server support, it aims to connect Qwen to external systems and developer workflows.

Open-weight Qwen models cover text, coder, vision-language, image, audio, and omni model families released through Hugging Face and GitHub. This makes Qwen not only a closed API product, but also a model family available for self-hosting and research use.
