AI-native IDE and agent command center for coding, debugging, refactoring, and managing software agents
Visit Windsurf →As of June 2026, Windsurf is positioned under Cognition (the company behind Devin) as an AI-native coding IDE and agent command center. The original Codeium/Windsurf IDE foundation remains, but the product is no longer only an “AI code editor.” It now focuses on managing multiple software agents, connecting to Devin Cloud workflows, and turning the local developer IDE into an agent management center.
Windsurf’s core coding experience revolves around Cascade. Cascade understands codebases, edits files, runs commands, retries based on test/lint/build results, and collaborates with developers on bug fixes and feature work. Features such as Tab completions, inline edits, browser previews, AI commit messages, quick review, Codemaps, and DeepWiki improve the daily developer flow.
Windsurf’s difference from Claude Code and Cursor is that it develops its own SWE model family alongside the agentic IDE experience. As of June 2026, the current in-house model is SWE-1.6. It is joined by SWE-1.6 Fast, SWE-1.5, SWE-1, SWE-1-mini, and swe-grep, each optimized for different software engineering tasks. The product also supports OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, and selected BYOK model access.
SWE-1.6 — Latest in-house software engineering agent model in Windsurf as of June 2026. Optimized for better SWE-Bench Pro performance than SWE-1.5, more parallel tool calls, fewer loops, and more efficient use of its own tools instead of relying on terminal. Trained with reinforcement learning to avoid loops.
SWE-1.6 Fast — Gives paid users the intelligence of SWE-1.6 with higher speed and lower latency.
SWE-1.5 — Previous frontier agentic coding model. Up to 950 tokens/sec via Cerebras, claimed 13× faster than Claude Sonnet 4.5.
SWE-1 — Windsurf’s first agentic coding model, built for Claude 3.5-level tool-call reasoning at lower serving cost.
SWE-1-mini — Powers real-time latency-sensitive tasks such as Tab completions and passive suggestions.
swe-grep — Supports context retrieval and the Fast Context layer.
Windsurf does not expose a classic input/output token pricing table to end users. Usage is tracked through plan quota and extra usage, based on the token cost of the selected model. Free models may not count against quota; frontier models and fast/priority settings can increase cost.
On March 19, 2026, Windsurf moved from the old credit-based system to a quota-based usage system. Plans now include daily and weekly usage allowances that reset automatically. Quota cost varies based on the token cost of the model. Pro, Teams, and Max users can buy extra usage at API list prices after hitting their quota.
The Windsurf ecosystem centers on Cascade, Agent Command Center, the SWE model family, Codemaps, and Devin Cloud.
Windsurf IDE keeps the AI-native IDE foundation. Syntax highlighting, autocomplete, debugging, inline edits, Tab completion, and editor workflows remain the product foundation.
Cascade is the main coding agent layer. It understands the codebase, proposes changes, edits files, runs commands, and iterates based on test results. Persistent context preserves project understanding across sessions. This is the feature that moves Windsurf from a simple autocomplete tool into an agentic coding environment.
Agent Command Center is the key layer introduced with Windsurf 2.0 (April 2026). With Spaces, Kanban-style workflows, and multi-agent management, it gives developers a way to manage multiple agents from inside the local IDE.
SWE Model Family is Windsurf/Cognition’s own software engineering model family. SWE-1.6, SWE-1.6 Fast, SWE-1.5, SWE-1, SWE-1-mini, and swe-grep are optimized for different coding-agent, autocomplete, context retrieval, and workflow tasks.
Codemaps and DeepWiki help with navigation, repository understanding, and context building in large or unfamiliar codebases. Codemaps provides visual AI-annotated code navigation — a unique feature not shipped by Cursor or Claude Code.
Windsurf Plugins bring the Windsurf experience into 40+ supported development environments. JetBrains support continues for IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and similar IDEs.
Devin Cloud is Cognition’s cloud agent layer. Available on Pro and higher plans, it connects Windsurf to remote autonomous development workflows. This brings local IDE work and cloud-agent tasks into the same ecosystem.
